Triennial Torah schedule - לוח סדר קריאת התורה תלת-שנתי

Sequential Triennial cycle of Torah readings for two 3 ½ years of readings.[1] [2]

(Containing entries for 175 Sedarim[3] – The maximum amount of Sedarim with documented support in Tradition)

Compiled from:[4]  Bomberg (Rabbinic) Bible (Venice 1524-1525); Codex Leningradiensis (circa 1008); Codex Keter Aram Tsoba (Ben Asher, 9th or 10th century, Keter Crown Bible, Jerusalem: Chorev, 2006); the Jerusalem Bible (Koren Publishers, 1992); Ms. Heb 5702 (Most of Pentateuch, Land of Israel, circa 10th century; Ms. Heb 790 (Known also as the Damascus Keter, with all of the Tanakh, Burgos, Spain, 1260); The Ladino Bible of Ferrara (Spain, 1553); Genizah List of Triennial Cycle Haftarot (Bodl. 2727); Catalogue of the Hebrew Manuscripts in the Bodelian Library (Neubauer-Cowley, Vol. II, 1906); The Bible as Read and Preached in the Old Synagogue (Jacob Mann, Ktav Publishing House, 1971). The Mishnah rules [Meg. 4:1-2] that three persons read the Torah on Sabbath afternoons, on Mondays, and on Thursdays; four on chol hamoed [the intervening days – other than the Saturday of the festivals, i.e. Passover and Tabernacles] and on the new moon; five on a festival Sabbath; six on the Day of Atonement; and seven on a Sabbath [Saturday] morning.

Verbal tallying[5] is used to connect the Torah to the Ashlamata. The connection between the Torah seder and the Ashlamata, though seemingly strictly verbal, is in addition eschatological. The messianic kingdom, rather than the related contents of the Torah lesson, is the dominant theme of the Ashlamata.

This schedule illustrates the bi-modality of the Torah readings and also of the year, by juxtaposing the first 3 ½ years with the second 3 ½ years fitted to the shmita cycle. This juxtaposition was done to cause each triennial cycle to line up on a month-by-month basis which illustrates that Nisan 1 coincides with Tishri 1. Several other coincidences include: Tu B’Shevat and Tu B’Av, Vernal equinox aligns with the autumnal equinox, Passover aligns with Succoth, the flood aligns with Lag B’Omer, the fast of Tammuz coincides with the fast of Tevet, the 25th of Adar aligns with the 25th of Elul, etc.

The beauty of this system is that everyone knows which year to begin each of the triennial cycles because we all begin just before Tishri in the first year of the shmita cycle.

Prof. Shlomo Naeh (Tarbiz 67 [5758]) proposed that the order of the Torah reading in Eretz Israel was fixed. According to him, the determining factor was that they finished reading the Torah twice every seven years. We agree with Prof. Shlomo Naeh.

Like a sphere with two poles, the Jewish year has two “heads” or primary points of reference, each of which is equally its beginning. Our annual journey through time is actually two journeys—a Tishri-to-Elul journey, and a Nisan-to-Adar journey. Every day on the Jewish calendar can be experienced on two different levels, for it simultaneously exists within these two contexts.

(For example: in the Tishri-to-Elul year, Yom Kippur is the climax of the Ten Days of Repentance that begin on Rosh HaShanah; on the Nissan-to-Adar calendar, Yom Kippur is the second “giving of the Torah,” culminating a 120-day process that begins on Shavuot. In the Tishri-to-Elul year, the seventh day of Passover is the cosmic “birth of the souls,” following their “conception” on Shemini Atzeret, the eighth day of Sukkot; in the Nissan-to-Adar year, Passover is the first festival, commencing a cycle that culminates in Purim, “the last miracle” and the final frontier in our quest for connection with G‑d.)

Bolded sedarim numbers are The Seder Divisions in the Masoretic Text. The unbolded are found in other sources as listed above.

An * indicates a special Ashlamata.

The Torah is split into 54 Torah portions (Parshiyot) for the annual Torah cycle, and we usually read one Torah portion each Shabbat. However, there are 14 Parshiyot that, depending on the year, can potentially be paired together, so two Torah portions would be read on that Shabbat.

The seven pairs are as follows:

• Vayakhel (Exodus 35:1–38:20) and Pekudei (Exodus 38:21–40:38)

• Tazria (Leviticus 12:1–13:59) and Metzora (Leviticus 14:1–15:33)

• Acharei (Leviticus 16:1–18:30) and Kedoshim (Leviticus 19:1–20:27)

• Behar (Leviticus 25:1–26:2) and Bechukotai (Leviticus 26:3–27:34)

• Chukat (Numbers 19:1–22:1) and Balak (Numbers 22:2–25:9)

• Matot (Numbers 30:2–32:42) and Masei (Numbers 33:1–36:13)

• Nitzavim (Deuteronomy 29:9–30:20) and Vayelech (Deuteronomy 31:1–31:30).

In order not to have the curses read in close connection to the actual festival, [and thus, a prosecuting angel might prosecute the Jewish people (Levush, Orach Chaim, 428:4),] we read another portion of the Torah to separate between the curses and the festival. Therefore, we read the portion of Nitzavim before Rosh Hashana, and the portion of Bamidbar before Shavuot. (Tosfot, S.v. Kelalot, Megillah ibid.)

The three Parshiyot of Pinchas, Matot and Masei, speak of the promise to the Jewish people that they will receive the Land of Israel as their land Therefore, the Sages wanted these Parshiyot to be read in “the three weeks” (i.e., the time of year when the Jewish people mourn the destruction of the Temple), as consolement to the Jewish people, as a reminder that they will once again be in the Land of Israel. Additionally, Parshat Pinchas speaks of the Jewish festivals, and these days of the three weeks will eventually - in the messianic era - be added as a time of festival and celebration (Bnei Yissachar, Ma’amar Chodshei Tammuz Av, 2:2).

The Torah reading of ‘If you will have children and grandchildren, and you will grow old in the land etc.’ (in Parshat Vaeschanan, Devarim 4:25) is a [projection to the future of the Jewish people. As Rashi explains: With this verse there is a] hint to the Jewish people, that they will be exiled (from the land of Israel) after 852 years, for this is the numerical value of the word Venoshantem (“And you will grow old”). G-d, however, exiled the Jewish people two year early, so that [the continuation of this projection] you will be eliminated speedily (v. 26) will not be materialized… It was really a kindness that G-d brought upon the Jewish people their Exile two years prematurely. By combining Matot and Masei, we ensure that the 9th of Av will fall in the week that the above reading is read [thus, hinting to the kindness in the destruction]. (Maharit ibid.)

The Rambam in Tefila 13:2 mentions that the Minhag is to read Bamidbar before Shavuot, Vetchannan after Tisha B'Av, Nitzavim before Rosh Hashana, and on a year with one Adar - Tzav before Pesach.

The following tables outline HaRav David Bar-Hayim’s triennial Torah reading cycle, as presented by Machon Shilo (https://machonshilo.org/en/triennial-cycle). The cycle divides the Torah into approximately 154 sedarim, read sequentially over three and a half years, reflecting the ancient Eretz Yisrael practice. Each table covers one year, listing the seder number, Torah portion, title, and corresponding Haftarah. The cycle is approximated into three years, with 51–52 sedarim per year, based on the website’s sequence and historical sources.

[1] Megilla 29b … for the people of the West, i.e., Eretz Yisrael, who complete the cycle of reading the Torah not in one year but in three years.

[2] The people of the East: the shaliaḥ tzibbur and the people read; the children of Eretz Yisrael: the people read a parashah and the shaliaḥ tzibbur s’darim. The people of the East: make Simḥat Torah every year; the children of Eretz Yisrael: for three and a half years. (88. 1938, Jerusalem :Mass Rubin ,החילוקים שבין אנשי מזרח ובני ארץ ישראל ,Margulies Mordecai) - The second part provides a valuable point of information that the Sequential Triennial Cycle lasted three and a half years, and not three. This could mean one of two things: 1) other references to three years were only approximate or 2) that in some places in times it was completed in three years and in others three and a half. There are also two possibilities for the meaning of three and a half itself: 1) the cycles were worked out to exactly three and a half years, which would allow two cycles to be completed in seven years (connecting to Deuteronomy)

[3] Rabbi Y’hoshua ben Leivi said, “I, in all my days, did not look within a book of homiletic literature, other than one time I looked and I found in it ‘175 parashiyyot in the Torah, speaking, saying, and commanding, corresponding to the years of Abraham, our father…’” (Talmud Y’rushalmi, Shabbat 16:1 16c) Therefore they fixed 175 s’darim in the Torah for each and every Shabbat as an eternal burnt-offering. (Massekhet Sof’rim 16:8.)

[5] Unlike the Annual Cycle haftarot that have come down to us, where the haftarah often has a thematic connection to the parashah, the Triennial Cycle’s primary criteria for choosing a haftarah seems to be having the same (or a similar) word between the first significant verse in the seder and the first (or occasionally second) verse of the haftarah. This is known as “verbal tallying”. Sometimes there might be additional linguistic or thematic links between the seder and haftarah, but it was apparently unnecessary. (Seee Aggadat Bereshit”)

[6] Rosh HaShana 10b It has been taught: R. Eliezer says: In Tishri the world was created; in Tishri the Patriarchs9 were born; in Tishri the Patriarchs died; on Passover Isaac was born; on New Year Sarah, Rachel and Hannah were visited; on New Year Joseph went forth from prison; on New Year the bondage of our ancestors in Egypt ceased;

[7]  in Nisan they were redeemed and in Nisan they will be redeemed in the time to come. R. Joshua says: In Nisan the world was created; in Nisan the Patriarchs were born; in Nisan the Patriarchs died; on Passover Isaac was born; on New Year Sarah, Rachel and Hannah were visited; on New Year Joseph went forth from prison; on New Year the bondage of our ancestors ceased in Egypt; and in Nisan they will be redeemed in time to come.

[8] There is a certain amount of evidence in the Talmud which points to the fact that there existed at one time in Palestine the custom of reading the Book of Psalms in a Triennial Cycle on Sabbath afternoons, corresponding to the Triennial Cycle of the Pentateuch, which is mentioned definitely in the Talmud (Meg. 19a) and which has been established by the brilliant researches of Theodor and Biichler. The references are vague enough, but taken together they do point to the possibility. To give a few examples: In Kid. 33a, the Books of Psalms are called chumashim.

[9] The world (Adam) was created on Nisan 1 (Rosh Hashana 10b) according to R. Meir and R. Eleazar. According in to R. Eliezer (Rosh Hashana 8a) the world was created on Tishri 1. We read about the creation on the Shabbat closest to Adar 25 and Elul 25, which are the dates when God said, “Let there be light”..

[10] We begin the book of Genesis on the new years of Nisan 1 and Tishri 1.

[11] The verbal tally between Genesis 1:1 & Isaiah 42:4 is ‘bara – בָּרָא’, created.

[12] 5782 is a leap year with an Adar bet.

[13] God creates the sun, moon, and stars. Genesis 1:14-16 – on

[14] Psalms chapter 150 has 10 praises which matches with Genesis 1’s ten acts of creation. Rosh HaShanah 32a: They correspond to the ten praises that David said in the book of Psalms. The Gemara asks: There are many more praises than that in the book of Psalms. The Gemara answers that he means those in which it is written by them: “Praise Him with the blast of the shofar” (Psalms 150:3). In that chapter the phrase “Praise Him” appears ten times. Rav Yosef said: The ten verses correspond to the Ten Commandments, which were said to Moses at Sinai. Rabbi Yoḥanan said: They correspond to the ten utterances through which the world was created.

[15] Psalms 150 is sung during musaf on Rosh HaShana and here we see it read on the Shabbat closest to Rosh HaShana.

[16] God blesses the seventh day and sanctifies it because He rested from all the work of creating. Genesis 2:3, Sanhedrin 38b – Tishri 2 in the year of creation was a shabbat.

[17] Tishri is the autumnal equinox and Nisan is the vernal equinox.

[18] Ps. 1 is connected with Adam and contains three verses of the following Pericope, viz., Gen. 2.17, 51.16 and 3.3.

[19] Today, a standard edition of Sefer Tehillim has 150 chapters, but Masechet Sofrim (16:11), among other sources, says there are only 147, corresponding to the years of the life of Yaakov Avinu.

[20] The verbal tallies between the Torah and the Ashlamata are “the heavens – הַשָּׁמַיִם “ and “the earth – וְהָאָרֶץ “. The Torah portion and Psalms chapter 1 both focus on ‘trees’; one tree is a man who can have life and the ‘Tree of Life’. Reference Proverbs 3:18, "She is a tree of life to those who hold onto her”. Note that we read these portions close to, or on, Shabbat shuva (the Sabbath of returning) or Shabbat HaGadol (the Sabbath of ‘the great and terrible day of the LORD’).

[21] The offerings of Cain and Abel (Genesis 4:2-4) took place on Passover.

[22] Ps. 2, if read separately, would correspond with Gen. 2.4-3.23. The Midrash to this Psalm28 has an interesting anecdote which leads up to the creation of man and quotes Gen. 2.7.

[23] This reading is read on the second day of Passover AND on first, second AND Shabbat of Succoth.

[24] We read the same Torah portion on the Sabbath during Passaver AND the Sabbath during Succoth.

[25] Deuteronomy 15:19 – 16:17 is read on the 8th day of Passover that is a weekday AND on the the second day of Shavuot AND on Shemini Atzeret.

[26] Deuteronomy 14:22-16:17 is read on the 8th day Sabbath of Passover AND on the Atzeret (Shavuot) of Passover AND on Shemini Atzeret, the 8th day of Succoth.

[27] Ps. 4 would correspond with Gen. 5.1-6.8. The Midrash29 brings Gen. 6.9, the opening verse of the next Peri cope.

[28] Mizmor Shabbat Korach

[29] This corresponds to Lag B’Omer on Iyar 18 where we use bows and arrows which relates to HaShem’s bow, the rainbow in Genesis 9:17.

[30] The flood began on the 17th day of the second month (Iyar 17 / Heshvan 17), 1656 AM.   Genesis 7:11  - Noach entered the ark on Heshvan 10.

[31] Ps. 7 could correspond with the Seder Gen. 6.9-7 end, and R. Levi30 makes the Midrash refer to this chapter.

[32] Shir Shel Yom – Purim (AY)

[33] The Tower of Babel is built, language is confused.  Genesis 11, Soncino Zohar, Bereshit, Section 1, Page 31b – This event took place on Sivan 6 and we read it on the Shabbat closest to Sivan 6.

[34] Ps. 8 in this case would be read the following Sabbath when the Seder was Gen. 8.1-14, whose Haftarah was Hab. 3.1-5. The Midrash to this Psalm quotes Hab. 3.3 and the verse has no other justification, except on this assumption.

[35] Shir Shel Yom - Simchat Torah

[36] Ps. 9 would correspond either to Gen. 9.18-10 end, or to Gen. 11. The Midrash to this Psalm is noticeable for the following points:

a.             It quotes Gen. 9.18 and 10.2, 5, 6 and 32.

b.             Gen. 11 is the story of Babel and the genealogy of Shem. The Midrash brings the same genealogy.

[37] Found only in  the Bomberg and Damascus Keter notes.

[38] Abraham defeats the 5 kings and gives tithes to Melchizedek. Genesis 14 – took place on Sivan 6. We read this two Shabbats after Sivan 6.

[39] Ps. 10 could be read on the same Sabbath as Gen. 12 and 13, which speak of Lot. The exposition of this Midrash is made to refer to Lot.

[40] Shir Shel Yom – Ten days of Repentance (AY)

[41] Ps. 11 coincides with Gen. 14, the battle of the Kings. This lends point to the Midrash35 which makes the “wicked ones” the Gentile kings.

[42] Mizmor Shabbat Vayeirah (AY)

[43] Shir Shel Yom – Shemini Atzeret (Gra) - Mizmor Shabbos Zot Habrachah - Shemini Atzeret or Simchat Torah

[44] Galatians 4:27 - In Galatians 4, we find Paul using Sarah and Hagar’s story in his discussion, and then pulling in Isaiah 54 at the end. It is thought that he did this because these passages were already linked in people’s minds, having been read together regularly in the synagogue.

[45] Shabbat closest to the fast of Tevet 10.

[46] Ps. 13 might be read the same day as Gen. 15 or 16. R. Samuel b. Nahmani bases his exposition of this Psalm on the verse Gen. 15.14.

[47] Shabbat closest to the fast of Tammuz 17.

[48] Ps. 15 corresponds to Gen. 18 or 19 dealing with the life of Abraham according to the Midrash.

[49] Mizmor Shabbat Kedoshim (AY)

[50] Reading for the first day of Rosh HaShana.

[51] Mizmor Shabbat Shoftim (AY)

[52] Reading for the second day of Rosh HaShana.

[53] Ps. 18 corresponds in the above list to Gen. 21 or 22, the birth of Isaac. The Midrash has the following references:

a.             Gen. 22.2, 3.4°

b.             Gen. 21.10,41 and indeed the whole Psalm is made to refer to Abraham.

[54] Shir Shel Yom – 7 th day Pesach (Gra, AY)

[55] Shir Shel Yom – Shavuot (Gra); Chanukah (AY) - Mizmor Shabbat Yitro (AY)

[56] the Sequential Triennial Cycle was interrupted on the four special Sabbaths before Pesach, on Rosh Chodesh, and on all of the festivals. A passage from the Tosefta on the same subject gives us our earliest hint of a reading cycle that is not fixed to the calendar: If Parashat Shekalim was [on a week] adjacent to Adar, whether it was before it or after it, we read it and return and double it [i.e. read it again]. And so with the second [special Shabbat], and so with the third, and so with the fourth, and so on Purim…(Tosefta Megillah 3:2) While this passage does not explicitly reference a triennial cycle, given that the four special readings come from different parts of the Torah, the only way that a special portion can be read on an adjacent week to the same portion in its place in the weekly cycle would be in a cycle that is not fixed to the calendar year or that lasts more than a year and in which the portions of the cycle containing those four passages can fall during Adar of different years of the cycle. Either way, we are clearly talking about something other than an annual cycle that starts and ends in the fall.

[57] Psalms 20 is all about the end of days. Pains and birth pangs will afflict Mashiach like a pregnant woman. Of that era it is written “May God answer you on a day of distress...” [Psalms 20:2] The nine verses (first verse is an intro) of this Psalm allude to the nine months of pregnancy. And the seventy words of this Psalm allude to the 70 years [of birth pangs] in the 6th millennium, and then he will be born and rule the world. - Zohar Chadash on Balak, Maamar Derakh Kokhav miYaakov

[103] Mizmor Shabbat Parshat Parah, and Shabbat Ki Tahvo (AY)

[104] Ps. 52 corresponds with Ex. 8.1-15.20. This last verse is mentioned in the Midrash,54 in a manner which is inexplicable otherwise. I have already referred to this earlier as this portion would also be read on Passover, and in the. second year Ps. 52 would be read about Passover.

[105] Shemot (Exodus) 15:1-22 – The song of the sea - Shabbat Shirah, meaning "Sabbath of Song," is the name given to the Sabbath that falls during the week when the Torah reading includes the "Song of the Sea" (Shirat HaYam) from Exodus 15:1-18. This song is sung by the Israelites after they miraculously cross the Reed Sea (Red Sea) and escape from slavery in Egypt.

[115] In a regular year (non-leap year) this reading falls on the Shabbat closest to Shabbat Shekalim. The following was then cited in objection: ‘If it [the New Moon of Adar] falls on the portion next to it [the portion of Shekalim], whether before or after, they read it and repeat it’. Now this creates no difficulty for one who holds that ‘When thou takest’ is read because [the regular portion containing this passage] falls about that time. But according to the one who says that ‘My food which is presented to ‘me’ is read — does [the portion containing that passage] fall about that time? — Yes, for the people of Palestine, who complete the reading of the Pentateuch in three years. Megillah 29b

[116] Rabbi Rabbi Yose ben Halafta  understanding of the Book of Genesis, the process of Creation began on Elul 25 of Year 1. (Tu B’Ab is forty days earlier.)

[118] There are many clear allusions to Chanukah in the passages about Passover. the robe worn by the High Priest while serving in the Tabernacle (Exodus 28:31) contained thirty-six bells sewn onto its hem: Zevachim 88b Our Rabbis taught: The robe [me’il] was entirely of blue, as it is said, And he made the robe of the ephod of woven work, all of blue. How were its skirts [made]? Blue [wool], purple wool and crimson thread, twisted together, were brought, and manufactured into the shape of pomegranates whose mouths were not yet opened and in the shape of the cones of the helmets on children’s heads. Seventy-two bells containing seventy-two clappers were brought and hung thereon, thirty-six on each side. R. Dosa said on the authority of Rabbi Judah: There were thirty-six, eighteen on each side….

[143] The Gemara states: “The earlier generations were called ‘sofrim’ because they would count [sofer] all the letters in the Torah. They said the letter vav in the verse, ‘all those who go on their gachon [belly]’ (Vayikrah 11:42) marks halfway point of all the letters of the Torah. While most of the letters of the Torah are written in the standard script, he says, there are certain letters that are different. Some are written in an unusual fashion, while others are bigger or smaller than the standard letters of the Torah. If one were to count all the small and large letters in a standard Torah scroll, one would find that there are 16 or 17 of these letters (depending on whether we count the truncated vav in Numbers 25:12.3) Of these, the ninth, i.e., the middle one, is the vav of gachon. In other words, the Talmud was not referring to the vav of gachon as the middle of all the letters of the Torah scroll; rather, it was referring to it as the middle of all the unusually large and small letters in the Torah scroll.

[144] The verse ‘Vehu rachum yechaper avon [But He is merciful, He expiates iniquity]’ (78:38) is the middle verse of Tehillim. It is here lining up exactly with the middle of the Torah.

[156] Ps. 86 would be read on the same Sabbath as Lev. 17. The chapter on the Day of Atonement. The Midrash to this Psalm ends with a reference to this day and concludes with the last verse of this Pericope.62 The references to repentance in the previous Psalm63 could also be explained by this fact.

[157] The pesukim in red are clearly linked thematically to the Torah and the Ashlamata.

[158] The pesukim in red are clearly linked thematically to the Torah and the Ashlamata.

[159] Leviticus 23 talks about each festival, in order, ending with Succoth. Leviticus 24 the ‘alludes’ to Chanukah with the lighting of the menorah. This reading is only one week removed from Chanukah.

[160] Tehillim (Psalms) 87:6 it is said that HaShem uses the secular calendar.

[162] Shir Shel Yom - Hoshana Rabba (AY)

[163] There are two admonitory (tochacha) sections in the Torah. One is in Leviticus (26:14) and the second is in Deuteronomy (29:18). Ezra declared that the curses in Vayikra be read before Shavuot and those in Debarim before Rosh HaShanna (megillah 31b). "the curses of Chumash Vayikra should be read before Shavuot" This explains why there is a "burst" of doubled portions between Pesach and Shavuot during a non-leap year.

[164] Psalms 89 is the end of the third book of the Psalms and it coincides with the end of the book of Leviticus.

[165] The 15th Ab is the last day of planting for the year with reference to the Sabbatical Year and orlah, the status of trees during their first three years. Trees are not planted within the forty-four days preceding Rosh HaShanah of the seventh year, in order to allow the tree to take root before the New Year. Regarding orlah, if a tree is planted before 16th Ab, then the remaining days before Rosh HaShanah are considered as one of the three years. The fruit is thus prohibited for only two more years.

[166] We transition from Leviticus to Numbers on the Shabbat closest to Tu B’Shevat, "New Year of the Trees", and Tu B’Av One of the two greatest days for celebration (Yom HaKippurim was the other).  Taanit 26b, Menachoth 85b.

The Pentecost reading from the Prophets is the very section Mashiach (Luke 4:13-21) reads, Isaiah 61:1-2! A Jewish Quarterly Review article, "The Reading of the Law and Prophets in a Triennial Cycle," by Dr. Adolf Büchler (Vol. IV, October 1893, pp. 1-73).
